 Week31  Back Next

Your baby is now approximately 15 inches long and weighs between 3 to 4 pounds.

Your baby is continuing to develop a layer of fat under her skin, in preparation for her arrival. Over the next few weeks your baby will really begin to put on the weight. The average newborn is around 7 1⁄2 pounds and 20 inches long. Your baby's lungs and digestive tract are almost completely developed, although it will be a few weeks until her lungs are able to function fully.

Your pregnancy is now into the third trimester and it can feel like it’s being going on forever! Breathlessness is common at this stage, as your bump starts to get bigger and you get heavier. You may find you get out of breath walking, climbing the stairs and sometimes even when you are just sitting down.

During the last few weeks of pregnancy you may begin to experience Braxton Hicks contractions. The muscles of your uterus tighten for approximately 30 to 60 seconds or as long as 2 minutes. Braxton Hicks are also known as "practice contractions" because they will prepare you for the real thing.

You may have noticed a creamy substance leaking from your breasts. This substance is called colostrum (pre-milk) and this is the first stage of breast milk. It is much thicker than the milk that is produced later in breastfeeding. Not all women will leak colostrum, but either way, this is considered normal. You may want to invest in some nursing pads that can be placed in your bra to absorb the colostrum.

Hemorrhoids are not uncommon during pregnancy and they often make their appearance during the third trimester.

Hemorrhoids are varicose veins of the rectum and are very painful. Constipation combined with
pressure on the rectum and perineum is the primary reason that women experience hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids usually improve after the baby is delivered. A warm bath with baking soda in the water may help relieve hemorrhoid, the baking soda will help remove the itch.
