Your baby has finally reached a weight of 1 pound and is 10 inches long.

Changes are occurring in lung development so that some babies are able to survive (with intensive care services) A substance called surfactant is starting to be produced, which coats these tiny tubes and stops their sides sticking together.

He will continue to gain weight in muscles, developing organs and the deposit of brown fat. The purpose of the brown fat is to retain body heat.

Depending on the antenatal care arrangements in your area, you’ll have a number of appointments with your GP or midwife as your pregnancy progresses. Appointments will become more frequent as you get closer to your due date.

Some women can become diabetic during pregnancy. This means you have unusually high levels of sugar in your blood. This usually disappears after you’ve given birth. It can be picked up in routine blood and urine tests you have during pregnancy. You may need to cut down on sugary foods in your diet to regulate your blood sugar.

If you are currently working, you should be finalizing the plans and paperwork for your maternity leave. Make sure that you have talked with both your supervisor and human resources department to ensure that everyone is on the same page. You want to be informed on what your rights in the work place are during pregnancy.

Drink plenty of fluids, especially water during pregnancy. Water is the best thing to drink, but vegetable juice, fruit juice, milk, and some herbal teas are also great. Try to avoid tea, coffee, and fizzy drinks, as they are diuretics, and can decrease the amount of fluids in your body and cause you to become dehydrated. If you are drinking enough water, your urine should be pale yellow or maybe even clear; dark yellow urine indicates that you are not drinking enough water.
