Your baby is about 8 inches long and weighs 9 ounces.
A creamy white coating is beginning to form on your baby’s skin. This white substance is called vernix caseosa. This substance helps protect your baby’s skin from becoming irritated while submersed in amniotic fluid. It is quite greasy so it will also aid the baby's passage through the birth canal during labor.
Your baby is now beginning to produce meconium, a dark green or black sticky substance that constitutes a baby’s first messy diaper. A few babies pass meconium while in the uterus or during labor. Meconium consists of amniotic fluid that has been swallowed, cell loss, and digestive secretions.
Your uterus is now at the same level as your belly button. You may have gained an average of 8 to 10 pounds up until this point. Expect to gain 1⁄2 a pound to one pound per week during the rest of your pregnancy.
Now you are half way, you’ll almost certainly be feeling the baby’s movements in the womb. Dads will be able to feel the movement of the baby by placing a hand on your stomach.
Heartburn is a common problem in pregnancy, so stay healthy. As your womb grows it puts pressure on your digestive system, which can sometimes allow acid to leak up out of your stomach and back into your oesophagus. This can cause a burning acidic feeling in your chest. Avoid heartburn by identifying the foods that trigger it. Eating smaller but more frequent meals and using extra pillows to prop you up at night will help.
It is time to begin thinking about the delivery of your baby. Creating a birth plan on your profile page will help you communicate your desires clearly with all the people who will provide support during your labor.
